The majority of people look for water when switching out the gear oil. They will drain the oil, check for water, then replace the oil.  Wrap the threads of the adapter and the pressure gauge with Teflon tape to create a secure seal. Make sure the tape is wrapped within the path from the threads to prevent it from unraveling during tightening.
